Movie Mayhem: The Event That Almost Wasn't
Event planning always comes with surprises, but this time, I felt like I was starring in my own dramatic film—complete with a last-minute plot twist. Our much-anticipated "Rock the Mic Fest" event had to be postponed for another special occasion, leaving me scrambling to put together a new plan. With no time to waste, I shifted gears and quickly organised a cozy movie day. But little did I know, the real adventure was just the beginning.
First things first, I spread the word to all the teams and set up a poll so our participants could choose their favourite movie. I held my breath, hoping for a crowd-pleaser. The classic Matilda emerged as the winner, and I thought to myself “Great! A timeless story, a sprinkle of magic—what could go wrong, right?”
Fast forward to the day of the event. I made a run to Coles, stocking up on popcorn, snacks, and juice, while the Jigmes from the rostering team and our case manager Dylan started the BBQ and set up the heaters in the venue area. I was nervously excited and kept pinching myself thinking everything was going smoothly... until it wasn't.
Just as everyone settled in for the movie, we realised that the remote for the smart TV had vanished. It was like it grew legs and walked off into another dimension!
Panic mode: ON. I was imagining disappointed faces, a BBQ-only party, and me hiding behind the snack table in shame. But then, just when it seemed like everything might fall apart, our case manager Yangchen stepped up to help me.
With a calm that I could only dream of, she connected her phone to the TV and accessed Matilda through her YouTube account. As the movie finally started playing and a clear, crisp print of the film lit up the screen, I couldn’t contain my gratitude. I hugged Yangchen on the spot, thanking her. I even promised to buy her lunch one day… though, full disclosure, I haven’t actually done that yet. (Note to self: I should really do it this week before she remembers!)
As Matilda played on, I looked around the room. All our participants were glued to the screen, completely engrossed in the story. But let me tell you, "Overjoyed" doesn’t even begin to cover how I felt. It was pure, unfiltered relief—like I had just won the lottery, minus the money, but with the priceless feeling of pulling off another successful event.
The office team jumped in to help, serving food while keeping the noise down so our participants could watch the movie in peace. What started as a nerve-wracking, remote-losing, snack-stocking whirlwind turned into a cozy, feel-good movie day. It wasn’t the event I originally planned, but in the end, it was one we’ll all remember. And next time, I’ll double-check for that remote!
